In the early 1990’s Grithog focused on the development of an improved method of transporting oily waste material.
At the time, other than vacuum trucks, there were no vehicles available to haul oily or water wet sludge other than conventional open topped gravel trucks. These units, although readily available, were simply not acceptable for hauling the sometimes wet, oily and almost always sticky material that at times would leak, drip and simply not come out of the truck.
Grithog determined that the following criteria would be necessary to have the most advanced oily waste bulker available:
a) Light weight units to haul as much pay load as allowable by local road restrictions;
b) Round body design to avoid corners to which material would stick, causing build up;
c) Stability of the unit during unloading process if unlevelled ground was present;
d) Very steep dump angle to improve turnaround times at dump sites;
e) Dual vibrators individually controlled to ensure full and quick off loading. (Hydraulic power to be provided by truck power units);
f) Hydraulically operated rear end gate to allow for controlled off loading of the sometimes oily, wet materials;
g) Small secondary hatch incorporated into large full opening rear door. This allows for controlled off loading of fluids only;
h) Full roof system c/w fluid tight loading hatches, grips strut walkways and hand rails to allow for supervised loading of oily waste material; and
i) Optional decant pump for removal of fluids from load prior to dumping of the sand onto pad. Hydraulically operated. This pump may be used to decant free water back to facility during loading operations.
Some additional specifications on the unit include:
• General Dimensions (tractor trailer)
• Height: 13’ 3” to the top of the railing
• Width: 8’ 6”
• Length: 56’
• Turning Radius: 72’
• The current style of trailer is a tri-axle trailer and a tandem axle tractor (power unit). In Alberta, a maximum load of 46,500 kg or 102,515 lbs can travel on a primary highway or grid road. The tractor/trailer configuration weighs 20,500 kgs or 45,195 lbs empty. This equates to a 26,000 kg or a 57,320 lb pay load. Based on a calculation of 1500 kg, or 3307 lbs, per cubic meter we can haul 17.3 cubic meters or 19 cubic yards. The trailer will physically hold much more material which allows room for decanting if desired.
• There are a variety of models - from units that mount on body trucks, to trailers that have tandem axle or tridem axle configurations.
• When designing the trailers, the idea was to have fluid tight large volume units. The trailers could be loaded with slurry made up of sand, water and some residual oil. The material was loaded predominantly with augers although slurry pumping is also currently being done. Once the trailer is loaded, or while it is being loaded, the vibrators are activated to encourage water/sand separation. The trailer is lifted slightly on the front so free water may be pumped from the back hatch.
• The tractor trailer unit is designed with tight lease and plant site manuverability in mind. The tractor has a set back front axle, short frame, no sleeper and a short turning radius.
• Initially Grithog tried an expensive tarping system to enclose the loads from wind, rain, and other elements. However; the tarps were worn and ragged and were discarded. The design was then changed to a solid roof with loading hatches and walkways. Grithog also has open topped units for loading material with track hoes or front end loaders.

Advantages of the Triaxle End Dump Trailer Unit:
• Safe to unload on uneven ground due to the quarter frame design giving improved stability
• New design allows unloading with tractor jack-knifed
• Larger diameter round tube bottom for fast and efficient unloading
• Very steep dump angle and twin vibrators also shorten unload time
• Fluid-tight seal on end gate and top hatches
• Light-weight for large-volume, long-distance hauling
• Visibiity of load to ensure only wanted material hauled to location
• Air suspension for on-site weight calculations
